~Joe Nathan’s season is in doubt because of a torn ligament in his throwing elbow. The Nationals season is also in doubt because of talent.

~Larry Brown has made preliminary calls to the Clippers. He’s either trying to line up a job or offering his condolences.

~And sources close to Allen Iverson insist he’s addicted to gambling and alcohol. In other words, he’s become friends with Charles Barkley.

Can anyone argue that Pedro Martinez DOESNT have the best job in baseball?

a: he’s a pitcher, so he only plays 1/5 ( or 32 of the 162)of the games
b: He’s an unsigned free agent until mid year, then signs with a contender. Takes 2 weeks to “get in the swing of things” then pitches in MAYBE 1/5 ( or 14 of 71) of the remaining games.
c: teams in the hunt will pay top dollar when they smell blood. Last year the phillies shelled out an even ONE MILLION dollars for his 5 wins!
d: he’s so rested from throwing 1/5 seasons that this could last another 5 years.
e: the media and fans love him. especially in NY!

So i guess another question is who’s gonna SNATCH him up this year? My guess is the Washington Nationals. That’s right i think the NATS may have what it takes this year to possibly be in the hunt come All Star break. They acquired RHP’s Miguel Batista, Ching Ming WANG and Matt Capps. 2nd baseman Adam Kennedy. C Pudge Rodriguez. Who knows? Crazier things have happened. Look at the 2008 Rays! (remember Sox fans? )

Ball Park rundown:

From the Pirates website “McKechnie Field, which is named after Pittsburgh native, former Bradenton resident and Hall of Fame manager Bill McKechnie, was originally built in 1923 and was renovated in 1991-93 to become one of baseball’s finest facilities.

The renovations included new grounds, wide access ramps, concession stands, kiosks and improved sight lines, all while maintaining a ballpark’s classic ambiance. The palm-tree lined park was integrated into the already 1920s Spanish-mission style by using masonry, stucco and structural steel materials. McKechnie Field was even pulled back from the street, allowing for the creation of a public plaza and walkway around the park. Inside McKechnie, fans moved closer to the field by expanding seating capacity from approximately 4,200 seats to more than 6,500 seats.”

From the guy who loves to Heckle there: I’m a little biased when it comes to McKechnie Field. Solely because this is where it all starts this spring for SH.C and the SC3! It will be the first direct heckle video upload ballpark in this site’s history. So, forever in my heart, McKechnie Field will be.

The park itself is probably the most urban of all the Grapefruit League. It’s basically right in downtown Bradenton. So it actually feels a little like the walk up at Fenway and Wrigley. Seating is very close to the field which is a refreshing change. Fans are drinkers, which is always nice. For some strange reason, a good beer and a great heckle seem to be life partners.

The Mascot, Pirate Parrot, (unoriginal as hell name btw), is easy to interact with. He patrols the stadium all game long and loves on field interaction with fans between innings. Last year, HeckleSaurus Rex and I heckled the Parrot telling him that he “throws like a CHICKEN!” He flipped out on us, went berserk and went for the squirt guns! He later countered with what appeared to be a friendly game of Simon Says with our fellow female hecklers. An innocent game that resulted in the Parrot trying to get them to flash him. Touché my foul friend!

For autographs and close player interaction: First and Third base lines as deep down the line as you can get.

 Unique to this stadium: If you can make it to the park early enough to catch some BP, I highly recommend it. The left field wall backs up to a residential neighborhood. Last year we were treated to the spectacle of Evan Longoria and Pat (what the F happened to your bat) Burrell having a homerun contest, seeing who could hit the house the most times! I’ll never forget that CLANG when those balls pelted that house. And I’ll never forget that that was the day Pat Burrell apparently used up his entire season long HR savings!

Tailgating: The stadium is in the heart of downtown Bradenton, so good luck. Surprisingly, there isn’t a good bar within walking distance. If I’m wrong someone please tell me. I would love to know, believe me! Parking is in very scattered lots, so you won’t find a common tailgating area. But walking beers are usually not a problem. Just use the BIG RED SOLO CUP that screams OPEN CONTAINER yet somehow shields citation. God bless who ever invented the BIG RED SOLO CUP!
